DAZN - Best Ten Seconds
This was a bunch of animations for a series of short interview/documentary pieces about the best ten seconds of a boxer’s career. I teamed up with illustrator/animator Renaldho Pelle for these, and we talked A LOT about Hulk Hogan, the Rocky series, and that episode of The Simpsons where Homer fights Drederick Tatum.
Fight animation is something I never really thought I’d do, so I had to watch Rocky III to brush up on my ‘what looks cool when big muscular dudes are punching each other’ knowledge. They were happy for us to make everything a bit more surreal- Sergio Mora’s snake tongue, Ryan Garcia punching his opponent into dust and Anthony Joshua sending Vladimir Klitschko’s head to Mars were particularly nice moments.
It was really great to work with Renaldho on this one- we had a lot of parallel memories of pro wrestling to draw on. We figured out one Friday evening on Slack that his key childhood memory of Earthquake crushing Hulk Hogan’s ribs in a backstage brawl was actually a staged excuse for Hulk to drop out of the WWF for a summer so he could film his parts for my key childhood memory; the terrible film Suburban Commando. Beautiful.
