Hot Chip - Spell (Superorganism Remix)
The video for Hot Chip - Spell (Superorganism Remix) is a mixed-media psychedelic journey through a retro computer world, where a series of instructional animations show a group of monsters attempting to summon Hot Chip’s Alexis and Superorganism’s Orono to their MS-DOS powered spirit world.
This video was an exercise in global collaboration- I worked with artists from the US, Japan, New Zealand, France, Korea, and Taiwan to create a mixed-media world coherent in its incoherence. It can be really nice working on stuff like this where a lot of people chip in because they’re happy to work on something cool- one of the illustrators was the drummer in my high school band, Pauline from French band Pi Ja Ma did some work on it, some people I’d met through being fans of my band Superorganism, and others I’d met working on music videos throughout the years or just through Instagram.
This is one where I had a small budget but a lot of time on my hands, as you can see from the ridiculously detailed chat windows, etc. below. It was cool to see that a lot of the skills that totally baffled me when I was working with all-star compositor Dan Hawkins on the Everybody Wants to Be Famous video for Superorganism were now things I could do myself.
